At its I/O conference in 2019, Google announced the addition of augmented reality objects to its "search" section.
Since then, a range of 3D animals has also been rolled out, which you can view in augmented reality right in Google search.
How to view them
Finding these animals is very easy. They were added to make learning easier, since the best way to learn something is to see it "in person".
Looking at the objects in augmented reality, you get a real sense of the size of the animals in front of you. They are in fact scaled to life size, bringing out details you wouldn't easily notice in an ordinary picture.
To do all this, just search for "alligator", for example, and a panel will pop up with an explanation and a small preview of the animal. Right there you'll see the "view in 3D" button, as in the image below.
Tapping that button starts your 3D experience.
What you need to see the animals in AR with Google
Every device is set up differently, and you may not see them on a computer, but in general all you need is a smartphone or a tablet. Of course, both iOS and Android smartphones will do, as long as they're updated to the latest software version.
There's no official list from Google, but this is the list of animals found so far:
- Alligator
- Angelfish
- Ball python
- Brown bear
- Cat
- Cheetah
- Deer
- Dog (Bulldog, Pomeranian, Labrador Retriever, Pug, Rottweiler)
- Duck
- Eagle
- Emperor penguin
- Giant panda
- Goat
- Wild boar
- Horse
- Leopard
- Lion
- Octopus
- Raccoon
- Shark
- Shetland pony
- Snake
- Tiger
- Turtle
- Wolf
There are probably more to discover, and Google itself is adding others. In the meantime you can search for these, or for other objects such as:
- Human skeleton
- NASA objects: (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus, Pluto)
That said, as always, thanks for reading, see you soon and enjoy your augmented reality experience!
