On 26 October Apple rolled out version 27.2 of its operating systems. The update widens the language support of Siri AI, the new assistant introduced with iOS 27, and adds a series of features to Messages, Photos, FaceTime and Home. For people in Italy, however, the headline feature is out of reach: Siri AI is not yet available in the European Union.
Siri AI: more languages and more context
When iOS 27 launched, Siri AI worked only in English. With 27.2 it gains French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. Apple says Traditional Chinese, Norwegian, Turkish and Vietnamese will follow by the end of the year. German, which some users had asked for as early as the beta, is not on the list for now.
What the assistant can draw on has also changed. Siri AI can recall earlier conversations and pull from more sources: photos in Messages, event attendees in Calendar, voice messages and Safari history. A new setting, “Excluded Apps”, lets you decide which apps can be used by Siri, search and suggestions. You can also copy just part of a reply instead of the whole text.
Apple still calls it a beta, across all its platforms, from iOS to visionOS. The phone must support Apple Intelligence and have both Siri and the system set to one of the listed languages. It is not available to under-13s. Apple also notes that some features based on models running on its servers, Siri AI included, have daily usage limits, and that extended access will be paid in future. No prices have been given.
The situation in Italy
Italian is one of the languages of Apple Intelligence in general, but not of the Siri AI beta, which covers English plus the five that have just arrived. Geography is the main obstacle: Apple writes that Siri AI is not currently available in the EU on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS and that it is working with European institutions to find a solution. It has given no date.
In practice, an Italian user cannot switch on Siri AI simply by changing the phone’s language: the regional restriction remains. For now it makes sense to update for the other new features and stick with the version of Siri already on your iPhone.
The other new features in iOS 27.2
- Messages: Suggested Actions arrive, shortcuts based on the context of the conversation, for example creating a calendar event from a chat in which you are arranging a meeting. You choose which types of suggestion to show.
- Apple Music: a new black-and-white icon replaces the red one, blue as the accent colour and widgets with a black background.
- Podcasts: on the Home screen, new episodes are kept separate from those you are in the middle of.
- Apple TV: profiles on iPhone keep separate history and recommendations for each person in the household.
- Photos: in shared albums you can edit captions and comments, duplicate photos are avoided and a reminder appears before the album expires. There is also support for the SynthID watermark to recognise images generated or edited with AI.
- FaceTime: Dual Capture works in group calls, and you can add a third-party sign language interpreter or live transcriber.
- Games: the Friends tab explains why a person is being suggested and shows friends’ recent games.
- Home: compatible locks get the “Lock after closing” and “Door left open” options. If you update both iPhone and HomePod, you get the Locks control, which prevents music from starting by accident.
- iPhone Duo: the foldable supports Apple Pencil (USB-C), but not Apple Pencil Pro or other models.
What is missing is the redesigned Health app: Apple pulled it before release and says it will arrive later in the year. We covered it during the beta in this article.
What we think
The language expansion is a logical step, but the gap between “available” and “available to everyone” remains wide. Siri AI is the centrepiece of iOS 27, yet the whole European Union is left out, Italian included. For Italian users the update is still worthwhile for the fixes and for the features in Messages, Photos and Home, but it does not change the way you use Siri.
Then there is the question of daily limits. Apple does not say how generous they are and has already announced a paid tier: an assistant that becomes a paid part of the operating system deserves attention once prices are announced, especially in a market where its arrival is still uncertain.
Our advice: install 27.2 from Settings, under General and Software Update, without expecting a different Siri. If Apple announces a launch in Europe, we will follow it here.
