Reddit is about to stop being a site you can read without an account. CEO Steve Huffman announced the move to a “logged-in-only experience” in the letter to shareholders and in a post on the platform. There is no date yet: tests will begin in the fourth quarter of 2026 in a handful of markets outside the United States, and the results will decide what the global version looks like.
What changes in practice
Today, anyone who lands on a thread from Google or a shared link reads it and leaves. Under the new model, people without an account will have to sign in to keep browsing. The boundaries, though, have not been drawn. Huffman explained that Reddit is still looking for “the right boundary”: the home page, he said, will remain visible without logging in, because it is “useful and important”.
Shared posts and content reached through search should also stay readable. According to Huffman, the occasional visitor arriving from a link is not the main target of the measure. It hasn’t been said when or where the “hard prompt” asking people to sign in will appear.
Incognito browsing is affected too: without an account it will no longer be enough. Reddit says, however, that it has rebuilt incognito mode inside its own app and plans to relaunch it. Huffman suggested that private browsing might also win over people who keep uninstalling and reinstalling the app.
Why it’s doing it
The stated reasons are more than one:
- Scraping. Huffman claims that most unauthorised access to Reddit’s data goes through the logged-out experience. Protecting the body of content that AI models would like to use is the weightiest reason.
- Advertising. Users with accounts give off more signals for targeting and, generally, take part more.
- Personalisation and regulation. Logging in allows more tailored feeds and helps comply with incoming rules on online services.
The fall in search-engine traffic weighs on it too. In the third quarter, referral traffic from search dropped sharply: according to Reddit, more than a million fewer visits a week, mostly from logged-out users. Huffman criticised Google’s AI Mode, which in his view sends no traffic to websites.
The change comes only days after the announcement of the new “For You” and “Following” feeds, and after the restrictions already introduced on Old Reddit, which has started requiring a login.
What it means for readers in Italy
For now, nothing: the tests cover only unspecified “select markets”, and Reddit hasn’t said whether Italy will be among them. Those who use Reddit only occasionally, to find the fix for a technical problem or an opinion on a product, are the most exposed: today a search is enough, tomorrow an account may be needed. Anyone who already has the app won’t see any difference.
It is worth checking a couple of things before creating a profile just to read:
- the email address you use and the account’s privacy settings;
- what data is collected for personalisation;
- whether the app’s incognito mode, when it arrives, is really enough to read without leaving a trace.
What we think
Reddit has solid commercial reasons, but the price is paid by those who used it as an archive of answers. The site’s value for an Italian reader lies precisely in the threads found by chance: forcing people to sign in risks driving away anyone who can’t be bothered to open yet another account, and some commentators fear a drift similar to X or Pinterest, where a shared link shows a login screen.
There is also a contradiction. Reddit complains about falling search traffic while closing part of the door that traffic came through. It works if the home page and linked content really stay open, as promised. If the “boundary” is drawn too tightly, search will reward other sources.
The fight against scraping raises doubts as well: an account doesn’t stop a determined bot, it only makes it easier to identify and block. For users, the real test will be the quality of the new incognito mode and how much content remains readable from a link. We’ll come back to it when the tests begin and we know which countries are involved.
