The FRITZ!Repeater 3000 AX is the smart alternative to the flagship 6000: three Wi-Fi 6 radios with a dedicated backhaul, throughput of up to 4,200 Mbit/s and a more affordable price. Do the savings come with significant compromises?

Design and build
Slightly more compact than the 6000. White casing with red accents and an integrated plug. Solid construction, with passive cooling that copes well even under heavy use.
Performance: a dedicated backhaul
As with the 6000, one 5 GHz radio is dedicated to the backhaul. In our benchmarks:
- Same room: around 860 Mbit/s over LAN, 400 Mbit/s over Wi-Fi
- Upper floor: around 450 Mbit/s (LAN), 300 Mbit/s (Wi-Fi)
- Two floors away: around 200-250 Mbit/s
Compared with the 6000, the second 5 GHz radio is half as fast (1,200 vs 2,400 Mbit/s) and there is no 2.5 GbE. The real-world difference for connections of up to 1 Gbps: around 10-15% less at medium range.
Dual Gigabit LAN ports
Two Gigabit ports let you connect two wired devices (a smart TV and a console, say) or set up an Ethernet backhaul to the router for even better performance. It can also be used as an access point.
FRITZ!Mesh
WPS setup is identical to the 6000. Automatic configuration, a single unified network and centralised management from the FRITZ!Box.
Final rating
| Design | 4/5 |
|---|---|
| Performance | 4/5 |
| Features | 4/5 |
| Setup | 5/5 |
| Value for money | 5/5 |
| OVERALL SCORE | 4.4/5 |
Our verdict: The smartest way to get tri-band without a premium price. For homes of up to 150 sq m and connections of up to 1 Gbps, it offers everything you need.
Conclusion
The sweet spot in AVM's range. The dedicated backhaul makes it superior to dual-band models, and it costs less than the 6000. If you don't need the 2.5 GbE port, it's the ideal choice.
