Great

The SoloCam S230 is the first camera I mounted from the eufy range, even before getting the HomeBase 3 or the PTZ models. Solar panel on top, fixed lens, spotlight, siren. Plug and play. After almost two years of continuous service, here is what it does well and what it doesn't.

Category: 2K wireless outdoor camera with built-in solar panel and deterrent features
Test period: running for almost two years on the outside of the house

Review at a glance (if you're in a hurry):

  • What it is: a 2K wireless outdoor camera with a built-in solar panel, a fixed 130° lens, a 600-lumen spotlight for colour night vision, a 90 dB siren and no hub required
  • Who it's for: anyone who wants a single reliable, self-sufficient camera without having to buy a HomeBase as well, and who can live with a fixed lens (no PTZ)

The SoloCam S230: 2K, built-in solar panel, 600-lumen spotlight, no hub required. Plug and play.

The main strength: no hub, no wires

The S230 doesn't need a HomeBase: you set it up through the eufy app directly on your Wi-Fi, it has 8 GB of internal storage for clips, and it charges through a solar panel built into the top of the camera body. Open the box, fit the bracket, clip the camera on, give it two hours of initial charge over USB-C, and from then on it looks after itself. For anyone who wants a single camera without having to design a whole ecosystem, it's the sensible choice.

Fixed lens: the trade-off to understand

The main difference from the higher-end SoloCams (E30, S340) is that the S230 has a fixed lens. No PTZ, no optical zoom. It frames a 130° diagonal area and that's what it covers. For a gate, a back door or a defined parking area, that's perfectly fine. For following a subject that moves out of the initial frame, it isn't. It's the classic "simplicity versus flexibility" trade-off: the S230 wins on simplicity.

2K image quality

A 2K (2304×1296) sensor at F1.6, bright enough to cope well with backlit scenes and the in-between hours (dawn, dusk). Faces and number plates are sharp at a reasonable distance (about 5-7 metres). It isn't the best in its class in 2026 (4K cameras are now widespread), but for the price it's consistent.

Spotlight and siren: real deterrence

The S230 has two deterrent tools that set it apart from more basic SoloCams. A front-facing 600-lumen LED spotlight switches on when the AI triggers: it's not a floodlight but a courtesy light, enough to light up a subject up to 5-6 metres away for colour night vision. The 90 dB siren can be set off manually from the app or automatically on a high-priority detection (exclusion zone). In two years of use I've had two attempts by strangers to "test" the gate: both times, the light and siren changed the dynamic.

AI and self-learning

The S230's AI runs on the device: human detection is processed locally on the camera's chip, which eufy claims is 5× faster than the cloud. In real-world tests, after an initial 1-2 weeks in which false positives show up (leaves in the wind, cats), the system improves on its own. Eufy calls this "self-learning" and in my experience it's real: after a month, accuracy for the "person" subject is practically 100%.

8 GB of storage and event management

The 8 GB of internal memory is enough for about a week of clips under normal use. Clips are saved only on a trigger (motion + AI), with a configurable length of 30-60 seconds. When storage is full, the oldest ones are overwritten. For a longer history, adding the HomeBase 3 is the natural step: the S230 is compatible and uses centralised storage of up to 16 TB.

Comparison with the S340 and the E30

The S340 is the big sister: PTZ plus dual lens, at twice the price. The E30 is the middle ground: PTZ but a single lens. The S230 is the minimalist choice: a fixed lens, but genuinely plug and play with no compromise on battery life. For anyone who doesn't need motorisation and is after reliability, it's the most sensible.

Frequently asked questions

Does it really work without a hub? Yes. The S230 is set up through the eufy app directly on your home Wi-Fi. 8 GB of built-in storage, on-device AI, no hub required. The HomeBase 3 is optional, only for those who want expanded storage or BionicMind.

How much sun does it need? Two hours of direct sunlight a day keep the 5200 mAh battery stable. Even in winter with little sun, battery life lasts weeks without charging over USB.

Can it be added to the HomeBase 3? Yes. The S230 is backwards compatible with the HomeBase 3 to use centralised storage. The advanced BionicMind AI features (familiar face), however, require the new-generation chip found in the most recent cameras.

Does the spotlight only come on at night? Yes, by default. The light sensor recognises day and night. You can force it on manually from the app or set up custom schedules.

Is it HomeKit compatible? No, only Alexa and Google Assistant. For native HomeKit, look at the eufyCam 2C or the Indoor Cam E220.

What's the difference from the S340? The S340 has 360° PTZ plus a dual 3K + 2K lens, while the S230 has a fixed 2K lens. The S230 costs half as much and is simpler; the S340 is more versatile but overkill if you don't need PTZ.
