The SoloCam S340 is the camera I hung on the wall of my house almost a year ago, and I haven't touched it since. Built-in solar panel, dual lens, a silent PTZ motor, no subscriptions. After months of rain, sun, wind and a few serious storms, it's time to write the full review.
Category: Premium wireless outdoor camera with dual lens, 360° PTZ and solar panel
Test period: daily use for almost a year in my garden
Review summary (for those in a hurry):
- What it is: a wireless outdoor camera with a dual lens (3K wide-angle + 2K telephoto), 360° PTZ + 70° tilt, a built-in solar panel and automatic AI tracking
- Who it's for: anyone who wants a single camera that covers a lot of ground and zooms in on details, in a garden or yard with no power socket nearby
What the SoloCam S340 really is
The term eufy uses is "dual lens", and in practice it means two separate cameras living inside the same housing. One is a 3K (2880×1620) wide-angle with a 135° field of view for the big picture, and the other a 2K (2304×1296) telephoto with up to 8× hybrid zoom for the details. The two work in parallel: the wide lens keeps an eye on the whole area, while the telephoto zooms in when the system spots something worth a closer look. All the PTZ mechanics (360° horizontal, 70° vertical) are motorised and silent, powered by an internal 9000 mAh battery that the solar panel on top of the body recharges with two hours of sun a day. There's 8 GB of on-board local storage and no monthly fee, and it can optionally be paired with the HomeBase 3 with BionicMind for up to 16 TB of archive and facial recognition.
Setup: really fifteen minutes
Installation is one of the product's strong points. Open the box and you'll find the camera body with the solar panel already attached, a mounting bracket, screws, a hex key and a very long USB-C cable for the first charge. The eufy app walks you through the procedure in Italian: add the product, scan the QR code on the back, connect it to Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz only, a serious limit if you live surrounded by 5/6 GHz routers and the 2.4 band is congested), and then position the bracket. It took me barely twenty minutes including drilling into the wall: the bracket is universal and fits almost any surface. The USB-C cable is only needed for the first full charge; after that there are no more wires.
Does the dual lens really make a difference?
Short answer: yes, but you need to understand how to use it. The wide camera is the default and handles the overall scene. When the AI software detects movement it considers significant (a person, a vehicle, an animal), the system can switch to the telephoto and zoom in automatically. In my experience the most useful thing is the manual live view: when I'm watching remotely, I can switch from the wide to the telephoto with a tap and zoom in on a specific detail (the face of whoever is ringing the bell, a car's number plate, a dog I don't recognise). With a single-lens camera you'd have had to choose between "I can see everything but it's grainy" and "I can see sharply but only a sliver". Here you get both.
The 3K image quality on the wide lens is excellent in full light: sharp detail, natural colours, and well-handled exposure even when half the scene is in bright sun and half in shade. At night, the 2K telephoto becomes the lens you actually use, because the built-in spotlight lights up a sliver better than a whole hemisphere.
Night vision: the smart spotlight
The SoloCam S340 has three night vision modes: IR only (infrared, black and white, up to about 8 metres), spotlight only (a white front LED for color night vision) and a smart mode that starts in IR and switches the LED on only when the system recognises a relevant subject. I set the smart mode as the default, because IR covers 90% of the pointless night-time clips (leaves in the wind, the neighbour's cat) and the spotlight only comes on for people, where colour really helps you recognise who is coming in. Colour night vision is usable up to about 6 metres; beyond that you really need good ambient light.
AI and tracking: where it shines, where it stumbles
Automatic PTZ tracking is one of the reasons I chose this camera over a single-lens one. When the system detects a person walking in the garden, the motorised head turns slowly to keep them in the centre of the frame and the telephoto switches on by itself for the details. It works well on people and vehicles; less so on animal detection, where I had a few dog/other-animal mix-ups. The system calibrates itself over the first few days and gets better — eufy calls this "self-learning" and in practice it's true: after two weeks the false positives drop sharply.
The weak point is notification management. By default the SoloCam sends a push for every detection, and in the first few weeks it was an avalanche. The fix is to go into the sensitivity settings, define the activity zones (exclude the road, the pavement, tall trees that move in the wind) and set AI detection sensitivity to "high" for people, "medium" for vehicles, and "low" or off for animals if you aren't interested in them. After this tuning, I get 2-3 meaningful notifications a day, with no spam.
Solar panel: can you really forget about it?
This is the part that surprised me most. The 1.5W panel on top of the camera body is well sized: in the summer months the internal battery always sits between 95% and 100%, even with 30 triggers a day. In midwinter (Tuscany, with the sun lower in the sky), the charge fluctuates between 75% and 90%, but I've never had to take it down and recharge it over USB. The 9000 mAh battery is generous: even in a week of cloud, you're not at risk of it shutting down. The secret is choosing the right exposure: you need a spot where the panel gets at least 2 hours of direct sun a day, ideally in the morning when panels are at their best.
8 GB local storage and no subscription
The SoloCam S340 records locally on its 8 GB of internal memory, without requiring any subscription service. This is one of the strongest selling points of the eufy ecosystem: no monthly fee like Ring Protect or Arlo Secure, and all your data stays under your control. The internal memory is enough for about 1-2 weeks of clips with normal use (10 triggers a day, 30-second clips). When it fills up, the oldest clips are overwritten.
If you want to keep a longer history or add BionicMind facial recognition, the S340 is compatible with the HomeBase 3 (S380), which lets you expand centralised storage up to 16 TB and enables advanced cross-camera AI. Without it, it still works perfectly.
Security and anti-theft
The built-in 90 dB siren can be triggered from the app or automatically on high-priority triggers (e.g. a person recognised in an exclusion zone). There's a hardware lock PIN in the app, and optional end-to-end AES-128 encryption between device and cloud. If the camera is ripped off the wall, it records until it's torn away and the last second ends up in storage. For anyone already in the eufy ecosystem, the SoloCam S340 integrates effortlessly with the Video Doorbell E340 and the Floodlight Cam E340, all managed from the same eufy Security app.

Frequently asked questions
Does the SoloCam S340 work well in winter? Yes. The 9000 mAh battery absorbs cloudy days, and 2 hours of sun a day is enough to keep the charge stable. Even in northern areas with little winter sun it stays operational for weeks without a USB recharge.
Do I need an eufy subscription? No. The S340 records locally on its 8 GB of internal memory, with no cloud service required. The eufy Cloud subscription is optional and only for those who want a long-term cloud history.
Is it compatible with Apple HomeKit? No, and this is the main limitation for anyone in the Apple ecosystem. The SoloCam S340 works with Alexa and Google Assistant, but doesn't support HomeKit Secure Video. For native HomeKit, look at the Indoor Cam E220.
How long does it last without the solar panel? Fully charged and with 10-15 triggers a day, the 9000 mAh battery lasts about 4-6 months without charging. The solar panel keeps it topped up practically all the time.
Does the dual lens record both views together? The saved clips come from the camera that was active at the moment of the trigger. The system can record with the wide lens and then automatically switch on the telephoto if it detects a subject to follow more closely. In manual live view you can switch between the two on the fly.
How noisy is the PTZ motor? Practically imperceptible from outside. Up close you can hear a slight hum while it rotates, but at a distance of a metre it's inaudible.
